Men's Tennis Finishes Regular Season with Road Matches
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team will travel to Charleston, S.C. to face the Citadel Friday, April 11 at 3 p.m. before facing Samford in a make up contest Sunday, April 13 at 11 a.m. held on the Furman Paladins campus.
The Spartans are 12-6 after winning two-straight conference matches to sit at 5-2 in league play. UNCG can clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference tournament with a 5-2 win against the Citadel.
Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) is 6-1 against conference opponents and has won three-straight matches. Sophomore James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) holds an 11-5 overall record and is 5-2 in league play.
Junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) is also 6-1 in SoCon action. In doubles, Dougherty and Phillips are 10-4 overall with a 3-2 conference mark.
Sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) are 8-5 in doubles holding a 2-2 conference record.
The Bulldogs are 2-26, 0-7 in the conference coming off a 7-0 loss against the College of Charleston. The Spartans hold an 8-5 advantage in the all-time series over the Bulldogs, and The Citadel is looking for its first win since the 2008 season. In the last meeting, UNCG blanked the Bulldogs 7-0 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
Samford enters with an 8-9 record and is 5-3 in SoCon matches. The Bulldogs have won three-straight conference matches including back-to-back 6-1 wins against Georgia Southern and Chattanooga. Elliot Barnwell is 12-5 overall with a solid 7-1 SoCon record. Fares Kilani and Trey Carter each are 6-2 in league matches.
