BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UNCG women’s tennis team wrapped up a two-match road trip Sunday afternoon as the Spartans fell to the Samford Bulldogs 7-0 at the Samford Tennis Center.
UNCG drops to 7-11 on the season with a 4-3 conference record. Samford improves to 16-2 on the season and is 7-1 in SoCon action.
Samford took the doubles point with a sweep of the doubles matches. Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. /Broward Virtual School) and Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./ Clover) fell to Kristin Lewis and Stephanie N'tcha 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/ Gunes Koleji) and Yasmin Franco(Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) lost to Yasmeen Edbada and Carita Moolman 8-2. Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) and Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) fell at No. 3 doubles 8-6 to Jessica Northcutt and Emily Mallory.
At No. 1 singles, Yurtkuran fell to N’tcha 6-1, 6-2.
Lewis defeated Falcon 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Franco fell to Ebada at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1.
The match was played indoors due to inclement weather in the Birmingham area. Only three courts were available at a time, and the teams decided to play eight game pro sets for the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches after the Samford clinched the match with four points.
Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./ East Chapel Hill) fell to Jessica Northcutt 8-2 at No. 4 singles.
Emily Mallory defeated Ellis 8-3 at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles, Sutherland fell to Lauren Caballero 8-1.
The Spartans have two more matches before the conference tournament as they host Elon Thursday April 10 at 2 p.m. and travel to Davidson for a 1 p.m. match Saturday April 12.
