Men's Tennis Welcomes Pair of SoCon opponents
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team will host a pair of Southern Conference opponents this weekend starting with Appalachian State Saturday, April 5 at noon at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The Spartans complete the weekend by taking on Davidson Sunday, April 6 at noon.
The Spartans are 10-6, 3-2 in SoCon play entering the weekend after dropping a tough 6-1 match to No. 49 Elon. Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) came away with the lone singles point.
Sophomore James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) holds a 10-4 overall record and is 4-1 in league play. Junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) is also 4-1 in SoCon action. Smith improved to 11-4 overall and is 4-1 in SoCon matches. In doubles, Dougherty and Phillips are 10-4 overall with a 3-2 conference mark.
Sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) are 8-5 in doubles holding a 2-2 conference record.
Appalachian State is 7-10 with a 4-1 SoCon record after falling to Furman 4-3 Thursday afternoon at home. Jack Maddocks leads the team with a perfect 5-0 SoCon record. Daniel Hoang is 4-1 in SoCon action. In doubles, the Mountaineers have two teams sporting 5-0 records in Zach Boast and Sebastien King as well as Oliver Casey and Hoang.
Davidson enters the match at 5-14 with a 2-5 conference record after defeating The Citadel, 7-0 last weekend. J.B. Gough is 7-7 overall with a 4-3 conference mark. Connor Evins is also 4-3 in SoCon matches holding a 9-10 overall record in singles. In doubles, Ethan Kallick and Evan Watkins hold a 3-4 doubles record in SoCon play.
