GREENSBORO, N.C.-The UNCG men’s tennis team travels to local rival Elon Wednesday, April 2 at 3 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Spartans are coming off a 4-2 win over rival Charlotte in the inaugural NC Showdown. With that win, UNCG improved to 10-5 overall. The Spartans hold a 3-1 record in Southern Conference play.
The No. 1 doubles pair of James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) are 10-3 on the year and the No. 2 doubles duo Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and Danny Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) are 8-4. On the singles side, Phillips improved to 12-3 with the match-clinching win over Charlotte at No. 3 singles. Dougherty is 10-4 in singles play, while both Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./ Park Vista) are 10-4.
Elon is 12-3 overall, with a perfect 5-0 record in conference play. The Phoenix most recently swept both The Citadel and Georgia Southern. Jordan Kaufman leads the Phoenix with a 10-2 record in singles play. Kaufman and his doubles partner, Cameron Silverman are 7-0 in doubles play. Silverman is currently ranked No. 36. by ITA in singles play.
Elon sits at the top of the conference standings. The Furman Paladins also have a clean slate in conference play with a 5-0 record. UNCG sits in fourth place behind 4-0 Appalachian State.
