Men's Tennis Hosts NC Showdown against No. 75 Charlotte
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team is hosting the inaugural North Carolina Showdown Wednesday afternoon as the Spartans welcome in nationally ranked No. 75 Charlotte for a 2 p.m. match at the UNCG tennis courts.
The first 25 fans will receive a free UNCG gold tee shirt.
UNCG sits at 9-5 for the season and 3-1 in Southern Conference play. The Spartans are coming off a 1-1 conference weekend after falling to Furman (L, 4-3) on Saturday but defeating Wofford 4-3 on Sunday. UNCG trailed 2-0 early in the match, but came all the way back to earn the victory.
Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) secured the win for the Spartans over the Terriers with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win over Parks Thompson at No. 6 singles.
On the singles side, Phillips is 11-3 on the year and both Dougherty and Smith hold 10-3 records. Dougherty has notched six straight victories, while Phillips is on a three-match winning streak.
Charlotte is 9-3 on the year and 1-0 in Conference USA. The 49ers are coming off a tough 4-3 victory against UNC Asheville last Friday in Asheville, N.C. Forrest Edwards is 7-2 at No. 1 singles and Paul Cisti sits at 9-3 in dual matches. In doubles, Jordi Ferrer-Massalle and Kamil Khalil have a 10-1 doubles mark having won three-straight matches.
