James Dougherty Named BCBSNC Blue Chip Performer
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's tennis sophomore James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) has been named this week’s Blue Chip Performer sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. This is the second year that BCBSNC has sponsored the Blue Chip Performer award, which is chosen weekly from all sports in season and runs throughout the 2013-14 UNCG Athletics season.
Dougherty helped UNCG claim two 7-0 victories against UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb. The Spartans have won four-straight to improve to 4-2 on the season. Dougherty went 2-0 in singles after defeating UNC Asheville's Tom Panoulas-Orestis, 6-3, 7-5 and Gardner-Webb's Nikita Zverkov, 6-4, 6-3. Dougherty didn't drop a set all weekend playing No. 2 singles.
In doubles, the Melbourne, Australia native also went 2-0 with partner Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) at No. 1 doubles. The duo defeated UNC Asheville's Brett Landau and Alex Croker, 8-4. They finished the weekend with a 8-5 win over Gardner-Webb's Ernest Alberch and Nikita Zverkov.
