Indoor Track & Field Wraps Up Hilton Garden Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams took part in the annual Hilton Garden Invitational this weekend at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, marking the Spartans’ third time running at the track this season. Both the men’s team and the women’s team turned in three personal bests in the two-day event.

Men’s Team

Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) was the Spartans’ top finisher, placing eighth overall in the mile race. Belles turned in a personal-best time of 4:20.03, trimming over 13 seconds off his previous top mark. Additionally, freshman Dakarai Shipp (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) placed 39th in the mile with a time of 4:30.79.

Senior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) also notched a personal-best time in the 800-meter race. Alston placed 16th with a time of 1:59.65, trimming over a second off his previous time (2:00.92). Sophomore John Elwood (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) placed 41st (2:03.38) while freshman David Guthrie (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) was 47th (2:04.31.

Sophomore Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) rounded out the Spartans’ top finishers, placing 16th in the 3,000-meter race. Crawford finished in a time of 8:48.50 while junior Brandon Cain (Graham, N.C./Coker College) finished 26th with a personal-best time of 9:02.09.

Women’s Team

Senior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) led the women’s team with a personal-best time in the 3000-meter race. Montague finished 17th in the event with a time of 10:36.49, trimming over two seconds off her previous top time (10:38.63). Freshman Katlyn Adkins (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) also placed 39th in the distance with a time of 11”58.11

The Spartans placed two runners in the top 30 of the mile race at the JDL Fast Track Saturday. Sophomore Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) placed 14th with a personal-best time of 5:12.08 while classmate Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) finished 28th with a new top mark of 5:18.37.

The Spartans return to action Feb. 14-15 with two events that weekend. Part of the program will take part in the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track while some runners will travel to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic.
