Men's Tennis Ends Fall Season Strong at Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team earned numerous victories to end the fall season strong at the Winthrop Invitational Sunday.
Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) led the way making the finals of the D2 singles draw going 3-1 on the day. Smith defeated Appalachian State’s Matt Saltsgaver, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) and earned a comeback win against Jackson Keith (Wofford), 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-5). Smith picked up his third win against Presbyterian’s Ryan Miller, 6-4, 6-0. In the finals against Dan McCall from Duke, Smith fell short 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) went 1-1 after earning a victory against Seb King (Appalachian State), 6-0, 6-3. In the semifinals against ETSU’s Sebastian Yilera, Sarioglu lost in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6).
Sophomore Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) went 3-0 in consolation singles earning wins against Kennesaw State’s Jake Bouchillon, 6-4, 6-3, Corey DeCandia (Winthrop), 6-3, 6-2 and Wofford’s Walker Heffron, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9).
Freshman Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) went 1-1 earning a victory against Winthrop’s Chase Altieri, 6-0, 6-2. Wilkins fell to Parks Thompson (Wofford), 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4) in the semifinals.
Junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) went 1-1 picking up a win against Daniel Kripak (UNCA), 6-1, 7-6 and lost to Grayson Mills from Presbyterian, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-3).
