CARY, N.C. – Sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) went 2-0 in singles advancing to the third round of the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships Thursday at the Cary Tennis Center.
Mack defeated Clemson’s Ryan McMullen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 in round one before earning a tough three set victory against eighth-seeded Adam Lee from Wake Forest, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2. Mack will take on NC State’s Beck Bond Friday at 1 p.m. in the third round.
Senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) won his first round match against William East (Central), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Sarioglu battled in round two but fell to South Carolina’s Chip Cox, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0.
Sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) dropped his match in straight sets to Steven Billington (Campbell), 6-1, 6-2. Classmate James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) fell in his fall debut to Winthrop’s Dylan Comerford, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.
Junior Randy Phillips(Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) lost to Appalachian State’s Ollie Casey, 6-4, 6-2 and sophomore Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) was defeated in straight sets against Grayson Mills (Presbyterian), 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, Sarioglu and Mack start their tournament Friday at 9 a.m. against Campbell’s Fernando Guillen and Marthinus Visser. Smith and Murray will take on Central’s William East and Daniil Gerasimov at 9 a.m.
