WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team finished Day One at the Wake Forest Invitational Friday night at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
In singles action, senior Jimmy Roueche (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) went 2-0 to reach the semifinals of the C2 singles bracket. Roueche outlasted Ross Nigro (East Carolina), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. In the quarterfinal match against Chase Tomlins (Iowa), Roueche came back to win a three set battle, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) went 1-1 on the day falling to Penn State’s Russell Bader, 6-1, 7-5. Sarioglu rebounded in the consolation match against Jack Williams (Charlotte), 6-4, 7-5.
Sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) went 1-1 after dropping a third set match to Stetson’s Egor Panyushkin, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. Mack picked up a straight sets win against Paul Cisti (Charlotte), 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) lost a tough three set match against Alex Fennell (Penn State), 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Phillips dropped a straight sets match against Iowa’s Jonas Dierchx, 7-5, 6-3 in the consolation match.
Freshman Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) lost in his debut to Liberty’s Guillem Secanell, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles play, Sarioglu and Mack defeated Iowa’s Dierckx/Hagan, 8-5, to reach the quarterfinals. Sophomores James Flynn (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) and Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) took down Dobrosavjevic/Lawson (Lenoir-Rhyne), 8-2.
Roueche and Wilkins lost to Wake Forest’s Billa/Osterling, 8-5.
UNCG will return to action Saturday, Oct. 12 starting at 9 a.m. at the Wake Forest Invitational.
