2013 SoCon Championship Brackets

GREENSBORO, N.C.
– UNCG's fourth-seeded men's tennis program will begin its journey for the second Southern Conference Championship title in school history when it takes on No. 5 seed Chattanooga in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday, April 19.

"The Southern Conference Tournament is what we train for all year," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "I feel like we have put the time in to be successful. It is alway an exciting event."

The Spartans are 14-4 overall and went 7-3 in league play this season to earn the fourth seed and a first-round bye. Chattanooga is 11-8 overall and went 6-4 in the SoCon, also earning a bye. The teams will meet at 9 a.m. Friday.

The tournament is being hosted by Elon. Thursday's first round will take place at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the Campus of Elon University, while Friday's matches will be held at the Burlington Tennis Center. Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's Championship match will be at Elon University.

UNCG is led by junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey / METU Development Foundation ) who earned a first team All-SoCon selection in singles after a 6-3 record against league foes. Sarioglu was 8-7 overall and landed on the second team in doubles with freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland). They posted a 15-2 record in doubles that included an impressive 8-2 mark against league opponents.

Freshman, James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) were named first team All-SoCon in doubles after an 11-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in league play. In addition, rookie Dougherty was named to the league's all-freshman team after collecting ten victories during the dual season, including five in SoCon play. Dougherty has a 10-4 record while playing at No. 2 singles for the Spartans.

Lastly, Phillips earned second team all-conference at No. 4 singles thanks to his perfect 13-0 record during the dual season. Phillips was 8-2 in league play with a pair of losses coming at No. 3 singles. Phillips heads into the conference tournament with a team-best record of 15-2.

UNCG dropped a 5-2 decision to Charlotte to end the regular season on Monday, while Chattanooga beat Georgia Southern, 6-1 in its regular-season finale getting wins from Manuel Barroetavena and Ankit Chopra at the top of the singles lineup after winning the doubles point.

Barroetavena had the rare feat of making the first team from the No. 2 position.  He went 22-9, 15-4 in the spring dual season and 8-2 in SoCon matches.  He was 13-3 while playing No. 2 or No. 3, and 2-1 when stepping into the top spot.

Chopra and Roberto Vieira were also a surprise addition to the All-SoCon squad.  They were paired together late in the season and posted a 3-3 record in the spring.  However, they won three of their last four matches, all against tough competition in league play.

UNCG fell to Chattanooga during the regular season, 6-1 in Chattangooa, Tenn. on March 16. The Blue and Gold got its lone win at No. 2 singles by freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista).

The UNCG-Chattanooga winner will advance to face the winner of Friday's match between top-seeded Elon (15-7, 8-2 SoCon) and either No. 8 seed Furman (8-13, 5-5 SoCon) or No. 9 seed Appalachian State (6-14, 3-7 SoCon).
