Men's Tennis Set to Travel to College of Charleston
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis program will travel to Charleston, S.C. to face College of Charleston for its final conference match of the season Friday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
"College of Charleston is always a tough team to play," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "They are undefeated at home this season. Our guys have been working hard to be ready to give it allthey got here for the last conference match of the regular season."
The Spartans are coming off of a 5-2 victory when they hosted Elon Tuesday to advance their record to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in the SoCon. The Blue and Gold remained undefeated at home this season.
At No. 1 doubles, freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) took down the No. 43 nationally ranked tandem, Cameron Silverman and Stephan Fortmann, 8-4.
Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) clinched the doubles point with a close 8-6 victory over Robert Lindgren and Brian Kowalski at the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, Dougherty lead the team at No. 2 with an easy 6-2, 6-1 against Fortmann, before Sarioglu defeated No. 56 nationally ranked Silverman at No. 1, 7-6 (7-3), 2-0. Silverman retired from the match.
Murray fell to Lindgren at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, while Smith dropped his match to Madrid, 6-0, 6-4. Phillips fought in a tough three sets at No. 4 to clinch the match for the Blue and Gold when he beat Kaufman, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
At No. 5, Mack finished off the match with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kowalski.
The Cougars' overall record for the season is 10-8 with a 5-3 mark in the SoCon. This ranks them 4th in the Southern Conference going into their last regular season weekend.
