Men's Tennis Earns Year-End ITA Rankings
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team finished the 2013 season with a 14-5 record that earned them a No. 9 Carolina Regional ranking and No. 78 nationally announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this week.
In the Carolina regional rankings, the Spartans finished No. 9 in the ten team rankings where Duke leads the poll at No. 1. UNCG earned a No. 78 national ranking after a 14-5 campaign that included a 4-3 victory over conference rival Elon.
Also Freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) ended the season with a No. 85 ranking in doubles by ITA. The doubles duo was honored as first team All-SoCon in doubles after an 11-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in league play. Dougherty and Phillips only loss in conference was against Furman's Andrew Mellow and Joel Cook. Dougherty and Phillips defeated two ranked doubles teams in Samford's Zac Dunkle and Garrison Laduca, 9-8 (7-3), who was ranked No. 52 at the time. Also back on April 9, they defeated Elon's Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann, 8-4, who were ranked No. 43. Overall, Dougherty and Phillips won 23 of 30 matches on the season.
Junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) finished No. 146 in doubles after going 15-2 in the spring season, including 8-2 in SoCon play.
