Men's Tennis Take Down Georgia Southern, 6-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team continues a five-match winning streak with a 6-1 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday, April 6 at the UNCG tennis courts.

"I'm proud of the guy's effort in singles today," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "Winning six of six matches is very difficult. We need a better showing in doubles tomorrow against Davidson." 

The Spartans started behind in doubles play when they dropped two out of three matches to the Eagles. 

At No. 3, sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) and freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) fell 8-6 to Alex Doherty and Kyle Hoffman. 

Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) lost to Andrew Dromsky and Rayane Djouad at No. 2, 8-5. 

Freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) fought at No. 1 in a tiebreaker against Matthijs  Verdam and Oliver Webb to earn the only doubles win for the Blue and Gold, 8-7 (7-5). 

In singles play, Smith started to turn it around for UNCG when he won in an easy two sets at No. 6 against Daniel Rush, 6-0, 6-3. 

Sarioglu defeated Dromsky at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2, before Mack picked up a quick 6-3, 6-3 win against Webb at No. 5. 

At No. 2, Dougherty outplayed Djouad in a close three sets when he clinch the match for the Spartans, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. 

Murray battled Codina Sala at No. 3 to win his first set, before falling behind in the beginning of the second set and making a huge comeback to claim the match, 6-4, 7-5. 

Phillips ended the match with the sixth singles win for UNCG at No. 4 against Verdam, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. 

The Spartans will finish out the weekend in Davidson, N.C. when they continue SoCon play against Davidson, Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
