Men's Tennis Set for Showdown against Rival Elon 04-08-2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis program will host Southern Conference rival Elon Tuesday, April 9 at the UNCG tennis courts at 2 p.m. 

"This is a big match for both teams tomorrow," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "We have an opportunity to place ourselves at the top of the conference and make a run for a share of the Southern Conference Regular Season Title. We just have to focus on our business and fight to the end."

The Spartans hold a 13-2 overall record and are 6-2 in the SoCon after defeating Davidson, 5-2 Sunday. 

The Spartans won two out of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. 

Freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) took down Kevin Moore and Chris Mark, 8-3.

Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) won a close 9-8 (8-6) match against Ethan Kallick and Joe Schafer. 

Sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) and freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) fell to Robert Lightbourn and Nicky Kunz, 8-4. 

In singles play, Sarioglu dropped his match to Joe Schafer, 7-5, 6-2. Dougherty picked up an easy 6-1, 6-1 win against Kunz, while Murray came up short in his match against 6-4, 6-1 to Mark. 

Phillips fought to win his first set before taking the second match easily when he beat Lightbourn, 7-6, 6-0. Mack won in a quick 6-1, 6-1 match against Connor Evins, while Smith defeated Alex Howard, 6-4, 6-2. 

The Elon University men's tennis team suffered its first Southern Conference setback of the season on Sunday, April 7, after dropping a 4-3 match to the Georgia Southern Eagles at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Phoenix hold a 14-6 record and are 7-1 in the SoCon.
