ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team only completed doubles as Day One was suspended due to rain at the Winthrop Invitational Friday afternoon. This is the final fall tournament for the Spartans.

“Today was tough dealing with the weather but we can’t control that,” assistant coach Brett Bernstein said. “What we can control is how we prepare and approach every match. There are a lot of good teams and players here, which I stressed to our guys that half of the battle is how we prepare. We need to be mentally tough and continue to carry that attitude into tomorrow’s matches.”

Senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) defeated Joel Roberts (Presbyterian) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Sophomore Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) dropped a tough match to Erik Artursson (NJIT), 7-5, 6-2.

Freshman Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) won a close match in three sets against Wofford’s Graham Duncan, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). Wilkins was able to win the third set tiebreaker to pick up the victory.

Junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) won in straight sets against Andres Alban (NJIT), 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and Wilkins took down Tennessee Tech duo 8-2.
