Jenkins Finishes Ninth At U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman men’s golfer Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) finished outside of the qualifying line for the 2014 U.S. Open Monday, placing ninth at the Sectional site in Roswell, Ga., at the Ansley Golf Club Settindown Course. The Ansley Sectional only sent two golfers to the U.S. Open out of the field of 31 regional qualifiers.
Jenkins advanced to the sectional round after placing fourth in the local qualifying at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst last month. He finished tied for ninth in the standings with a 4-over par 148 in the two round, 36-hole event Monday.
Jenkins opened the day with a solid start, posting an even par 72 in round one as he posted 16 par scores to go along with one birdie and one bogey. He started round two with a little trouble as he bogeyed No. 1 and 2 before birding No. 4. He recorded a double bogey on No. 5 before settling in and notching 11 straight pars. Henrik Norlander and amateur Smylie Kaufman qualified for the U.S. Open with 4-under par and 2-under par scores, respectively.
Jenkins was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year as well as earning First Team All-SoCon accolades this season. He helped the Spartans place third at the SoCon Championships and advance to their first-ever NCAA Regional where they finished seventh overall, just two shots out of advancing to the NCAA National Championships.
Jenkins was second in the SoCon with a 72.47 stroke average in 34 total rounds of golf. He posted eight top 20 finishes, including six in the top 10 during his rookie campaign. He won his third career collegiate event, taking home the title at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate with a 13-under par 203 score. He tied the UNCG single-round low score with a 9-under 63 in the second round of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
