GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team will head to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in program history this week, travelling to Auburn, Ala., as one of 14 teams in the Auburn Regional. Play in the three-round, 54-hole event runs Thursday-Saturday at the Auburn University Club. The 10th-seeded Spartans are slated to tee off Thursday on the par-72, 7,254-yard course from 9:10-9:50 a.m. (CT) on the 10th hole with live scoring set available at www.golfstatresults.com.

Joining the 60th-ranked Spartans in the regional is defending champion and No. 1 Alabama, No. 12 Virginia Tech, No. 13 Texas, No. 23 Auburn, No. 25 New Mexico, No. 36 BYU, No. 37 Kennesaw State, No. 48 Colorado, No. 49 Louisville, No. 62 California-Davis, Sam Houston State, St. John’s and Alabama State.

The Spartans enter the regional as the 10th seed after finishing third at the Southern Conference Championships and becoming one of three SoCon teams in the postseason. Fellow SoCon members Georgia Southern and Chattanooga will also take part in the regionals, with GSU heading to San Antonio and Chattanooga in Eugene.

Leading the way for the Spartans is freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) and junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury). Jenkins and Dixon finished the regular season second and fifth, respectively, in stroke average in the conference while earning All-SoCon honors along with sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry). This season marked the first time in program history that UNCG has placed three members on the SoCon All-Conference Team.

Jenkins led the Spartans with a 72.16 stroke average in 31 rounds on his way to earning SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades. He posted six top 10 finishes and eight in the top 20 on the season, including a tournament victory at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in just his third collegiate event. Additionally, he just advanced through U.S. Open local qualifying this past week with a 4-under par 68 and will take part in sectional qualifying June 2.

Dixon, who will hold the top spot in the lineup this week, boasted a 72.65 stroke average on the season. He finished his regular season strong, posting three top three finishes in the last four events of the year. He was third at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, second at the Middleburg Bank Collegiate and third at the SoCon Championships.

Coalson rounded out the Spartans earning All-SoCon honors this season after posting a 73.45 stroke average on the year. He recorded six top 20 finishes on the season, including season-best seventh place showing at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. Rounding out the Spartans’ lineup is freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams).

The Auburn University Club is just minutes from the Auburn campus and is situated on 225 acres of rolling hills and woodlands. The AU Club was designed by Bill Bergin in 1999 and surrounds the 25-acre Yarbrough Lake and bordered by Saugahatchee Creek.

The six, 54-hole regional tournaments will all be conducted May 15-17. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at three regionals (Raleigh, Eugene, San Antonio), while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams (Auburn, Columbia, Sugar Grove).

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. The finals will be conducted May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas with Wichita State acting as the host institution.
