GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG played toe-to-toe with Southern Conference leader Western Carolina for the third-straight day Sunday, but the Spartans could not muster enough offense in a 3-1 setback to the Catamounts at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Western Carolina (20-9, 8-1 SoCon) swept a series in Greensboro for the second-straight season and has won nine-straight games while UNCG (14-16, 2-6 SoCon) dropped its fifth consecutive SoCon decision. The Blue and Gold lost the three contests by a combined four runs.

The Spartans out-hit the Catamounts in all three games, including by an 8-7 margin Sunday, but their only run came off a leadoff home run by senior Sean Guite (Huntington Beach, Calif./Irvine Valley CC) in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Senior Dylan Thompson (Snow Camp, N.C./Guilford Technical CC) dropped to 1-3 on the season with the tough-luck loss. He put in a solid seven innings of work, scattering seven hits and giving up three runs while walking one and striking out two. Jordan Smith threw a complete game for WCU, allowing just one run on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Guite went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored – extending his hitting streak to 11 games in the process. Juniors L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai’i/Ohlone College) and Hunter King (Mason City, Iowa/Northern Iowa Area CC) also kept hitting streaks alive, running them to 15 and 13 games respectively with a base knock apiece.

A passed ball led the to the first run for Western Carolina in the top of the second as Bermudez was hit by a pitch and moved to second on the passed ball. Dylota Spiess then singled up the middle to plate Bermudez and put the Catamounts ahead early.

Guite put the only blemish on Smith’s pitching line in the bottom of the fourth and tied the score, drilling a pitch over the wall in left field for a leadoff home run – his second round-tripper of the season. Western Carolina would jump back ahead however in the top of the sixth thanks to a RBI double by Cody Jones and a Jacob Hoyle sacrifice fly.

The Spartan bullpen kept the Catamounts off of the board in the eighth and ninth innings, but the offense could not put a rally together to avoid the sweep.

UNCG kicks off a nine-game road swing Tuesday, heading over to Winston-Salem for a contest at Wake Forest. First pitch inside the Wake Forest Baseball Park is slated for 6 p.m.
