GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 50th-ranked UNCG men’s golf team claimed its 17th team title in program history Tuesday afternoon as the Spartans held on to their 36-hole lead with a solid third and final round to win the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by six strokes over Belmont. The Pinehurst Intercollegiate is played with the first and third rounds at Pinehurst No. 8, while the second round is held at famed Pinehurst No. 2, the home of the 2014 U.S. Open Championship and the 2014 Women’s U.S. Open Championship.

The Spartans finished the 54-hole event with a 893 score after posting scores of 302 in both rounds one and three at Pinehurst No. 8, while recording the lowest round of the tournament with a 289 at Pinehurst No. 2. UNCG saw all five of its starting lineup finish in the top 21 of the field and all seven of its golfers, individuals included, finish in the top 31 of the 61-person field.

The Spartans opened the day with a 10-stroke lead and extended to as large as 17 strokes, but held off Belmont down the stretch as the Bruins pulled within one stroke of the lead with five holes to play. The Spartans were able to close the deal on the final three holes, picking up a couple of strokes along the way for the six-stroke victory.

Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) continued his All-Conference type play of late with a career-best third place finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. Dixon finished a 9-over 221 on the three-day event, trailing on Danny Pizetoski of Richmond (215) and Patric Sundlof of Eastern Kentucky (218) in the standings. He opened the tournament with a 4-over par 75 in round one, posted the best round of the day Monday with an even-par 70 on No. 2 before closing out on No. 8 with a 5-over par 76. Dixon posted a then-career-best 11th-place finish last week at the USF Invitational.

Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) also turned in a new career-best finish, placing fourth overall in the field with an 11-over par 223. McGlone maintained his fourth-place showing after 36 holes with a 3-over par 74 in the third and final round, the low round for the UNCG five-man starting lineup. He opened the event with a 5-over 76 Sunday in round one and notched his best round of the week with a 3-over par 73 on No. 2.

Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) moved into a tie for 13th place overall with a 15-over par 227. Coalson opened the week with a 1-over par 72, followed that up with an 8-over par 78 Monday before carding a 6-over par 77 to round out his week.

Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) moved up three spots on the final day to finish tied for 16th overall with a 17-over par 229. Jenkins opened the week with an 8-over par 79 before notching back-to-back rounds of 75 Monday and Tuesday. Junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) rounded out the Spartans’ lineup with a 18th place finish with a 18-over par 230.

Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) added a 21st place showing as an individual, finishing 19-over par with a 231. Haithcock posted a 76 in round one, a 75 in round two and an 80 in the third and final round. Redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) wrapped up the UNCG contingent with a 31st place showing as an individual with a 235 score.

The Spartans return to the course March 23-25 with the C&F Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
