Menís Golf Opens Spring Season At Puerto Rico Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 62 UNCG men’s golf team returns to the course this week as the Spartans open the spring portion of the 2013-14 schedule with the 16th annual Puerto Rico Classic Sunday-Tuesday. The 54-hole event will be played at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The par-72, 6,945 yard course will see 18 holes played each day with live scoring available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Puerto Rico Classic is one of the elite tournaments of the season as it features five top 10 teams, 10 top 50 teams and 14 top 100 teams in the Golf Stat rankings. Joining the No. 62 Spartans will be No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Georgia, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 25 SMU, No. 33 Northwestern, No. 38 Purdue, No. 42 Clemson, No. 43 North Carolina, No. 59 Missouri, No. 66 East Tennessee State, No. 93 N.C. State and No. 108 Michigan. Additionally, the field includes 29 of the top 150 players in the country with 11 in the top 50.
Leading the way for the Spartans is freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) who ranks second in the Southern Conference this year with a 71.63 stroke average. Jenkins has posted four top 10 finishes this season, while placing in the top 10 the last three events of the fall. He won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in his third career event, posting the lowest 54-hole score in UNCG history.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) earned SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades last season and owns a 73.50 stroke average through the fall. Coalson recorded two top 20 finishes in the fall season, including 16th place showing in his last outing at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. His best event of the fall was a seventh place finish at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) boasts the Spartans’ second-lowest stroke average this year at 73.36. He also turned in two top 20 finishes this year with his best showing coming at the VCU Shootout where he placed 13th overall.
Rounding out the Spartans’ five-person lineup is junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams). Ehlert boasted a 75.45 stroke average in the fall while Haithcock was fourth on the team with a 74.00 stroke average.
