Dixon Leads Menís Golf After 36 Holes At VCU Shootout
RICHMOND, Va. – UNCG junior men’s golfer Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) sits in 11th place overall after 36 holes of the ninth annual Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout Monday helping the Spartans place eighth overall in the team standings after the first day at the Hermitage Country Club. The third and final round will be played Tuesday with 8:45 a.m. tee times. Live scoring will be available via Golf Stat with links at www.uncgspartans.com.
Dixon shot an even-par 144 in the first two rounds Monday as he opened with a 2-under par 70 in round one before posting a 2-over par 74 in round two. Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech holds the 36-hole lead with a 7-under par 137 as he carded rounds of 69 and 68. Dixon’s first round score of 70 marked the second under par round for him in the first four rounds of the 2013-14 season.
UNCG as a team sits in eighth overall with a 594 after turning in scores of 299 and 295 on the first day. No. 33 Virginia Tech leads the even with a 9-under par 567 (287-280) while Iowa State is second with a 569 (282-287).
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) moved into a tie for 25th overall with a 3-over par 147 Monday. Jenkins opened with a 76 in round one before rebounding with a 1-under par 71 in round two in his second collegiate outing. His second round score of 71 tied his low-round score from last season at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate when he place ninth overall.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) continued his solid start to the season as he is in 33rd place overall with a 5-oiver par 149. Haithcock displayed consistent scores with a first round tally of 74 and a senior round number of 75. All five rounds of the young season have been shot with a 76 or younger for Haithcock.
Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) also turned in a two-round score of 147 to sit in a tie for 25th as an individual. McGlone opened with an even-par 72 in round one then carded a 3-over par 75 in round two. His first round score of 72 is a career-low in his second event of the season.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) and junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) round out the Spartans’ lineup in 56th and 63rd place, respectively.
The third and final round begins with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The Spartans are set to tee off from holes No. 8, 9, 10 and 11 Tuesday.
