Menís Golf Travels To VCU Shootout Monday & Tuesday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team hits the road for its second event of the season, travelling to Richmond, Va., for the ninth annual Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout Monday and Tuesday. Live scoring will be available via Golf Stat with links at www.uncgspartans.com.
The 54-hole event will be held at the par-72 6,995-yard Hermitage Country Club with 36 holes held Monday and the final 18 holes Tuesday. Joining the Spartans in the event is Central Connecticut State, George Mason, George Washington, James Madison, Iowa State, Maryland, Old Dominion, Radford, Richmond, VCU and Virginia Tech.
The Spartans are coming off a solid showing in their season opener when they placed third overall at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate last weekend. UNCG posted an 873-team score (293-289-291) at the Finley Golf Course last weekend, trimming 26 strokes off its score from the year before.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) made his collegiate debut at the Tar Heel and posted a ninth place finish. Jenkins shot an even par 216 in the event with a first round score of 73, a second round score of 72 and a final round tally of 71.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) was the Spartans’ second finisher, placing 19th overall with a 3-over par 219. Dixon held the lead after a first round 69 and was in in fourth place after 36 holes with a 73 in round two before posting a third round 77.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) is the reigning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year after leading the team in stroke average last year (74.19). Coalson had a slow start to the year at the Tar Heel, posting an 11-over par 227. Junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) finished 23rd overall with a 4-over par 220 at the Finley Golf Course Ehlert opened with a 75 in round one and a 74 in round two before finishing with his top round of the weekend, firing a 1-under par 71.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) posted a 5-over par 221 at the event, good for a 28th place finish. Haithcock started slowly with a 76 in round one before turning in a 2-under par 70 in round two. He capped off his weekend with a 3-over par 75 Sunday.
