GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team opens the 2013-14 season this weekend as they take part in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill. The two-day, 54-hole event will take place at the 7,242-yard Finely Golf Club with live scoring available at www.golfstatresults.com. Saturday’s first round will start at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start while Sunday will have 7:30 tee times.
Participating schools include Boston College, Davidson, Duke, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Furman, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, UNCW and VCU.
Leading the way for the Spartans is sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) after being named the Southern Conference Freshman Golfer of the Year last season. Coalson posted a 74.69 stroke average last sason and four top five finishes as a rookie. He finished his year with a second place showing at the SoCon Championships.
Juniors Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) also return for the Spartans. Ehlert owned a 76.79 stroke average in 28 rounds last season as a sophomore with his best showing coming at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate where he placed 19th. Dixon turned in an 11th place finish at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate last spring for his top showing.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) will open his rookie campaign this weekend after an illustrious junior golf career. Jenkins, the North Carolina Junior Golfer of the Year last season, won two Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) tournament titles over the summer and four events on the CGA schedule the last two years.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) rounds out the Spartans in the lineup this weekend while freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) will play as an individual.
