Coalson Sits In Second Place After Day One Of SoCon Golf Championships
DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – UNCG freshman men's golfer Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) continued to solidify his position as the top freshman in the Southern Conference this season as he opened the 2013 SoCon Championships one shot out of the overall lead in second place after the first round at the Ralston Creek Golf Course on Daniel Island Sunday. Round two of the three-round, 54-hole event will be held Monday with the Spartans set for tee times from 8:50-9:30 a.m.
Coalson began his first ever SoCon Championship by posting an even-par 72 Sunday and is in a tie for second place with Chattanooga's Steven Fox who recently made the cut at the 2013 Masters. He trails the individual lead by one stroke behind 18-hole leader Todd Eckstein of Davidson (1-under, 71). Coalson recorded five birdies in the first round and sat 3-under par through 12 holes but post a pair of double bogeys on holes No. 13 and 15 before turning in a par on No. 16 to finish even for the day.
Coalson's play led the Spartans to a tie for seventh place overall with a 315, matching Georgia Southern. Davidson leads the team standings as well after posting a 297 Sunday to lead No. 48 Chattanooga by one stroke as the Mocs turned in a score of 298.
Sophomore Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) sits in a tie for 27th overall after posting a score of 8-over par 80 Sunday. Freshman Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) turned in a score of 9-over par 81 to sit in a tie for 34th place as the Spartans' third best score of the afternoon.
Senior Robert Hoadley (Union Pines, N.C./Southern Pines) and sophomore Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) round out the Spartans in the lineup as they carded 10-over par 82 in the first round to sit in a tie for 44th place overall.
Round two of the SoCon Championships will be held Monday with the Spartans set for tee times from 8:50-9:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available via Golf Stat with a link at www.uncgspartans.com.
