Men's Golf Travels To The Gary Koch Invitational Monday & Tuesday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf program has its final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championships as the Spartans travel to Tampa, Fla., for the prestigious Gary Koch Invitational held at the Old Memorial Golf Club. The 54-hole event is co-hosted by Auburn and Kentucky and will include 36 holes played Monday and 18 holes played Tuesday with tee times both days.
The 14-team field includes seven nationally ranked teams that will play the Old Memorial course at a par-72 at 7,389 yards. The field includes UNCG, No. 8 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Florida, No. 18 Florida State, No. 19 North Florida, No. 20 Auburn, No. 26 Wake Forest, No. 50 Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, Kentucky, Ohio State, Pacific, South Florida and the College of Charleston.
The Spartans are led by freshman Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) who is coming off his best tournament of his young career. Coalson finished sixth at the Bancorp South Intercollegiate, firing a career-low 5-under par 211 as he shot under par all three rounds for the first time in his career. He opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 1-under par 71 on day one before matching his career-best round with a 3-under 69 in the final round to move up to sixth place.
Coalson leads the Spartans and all freshmen in the Southern Conference with a 74.40 stroke average. His stroke average ranks 19th in the SoCon and is almost a half stroke better than any other freshmen in the league. Additionally, he has posted three top-10 finishes this year which leads all league freshmen.
Coalson's play helped the Spartans post their best 54-hole team score of the season at 892, marking their best total since shooting an 872 last season at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate. UNCG closed out the tournament with a season-low 290 in the final round to post a top-10 finish in the tough field.
Senior Robert Hoadley (Southern Pines, N.C./Union Pines) is second on the team with a 75.80 stroke average and is coming off a 27th place finish at the Bancorp South Intercollegiate. Hoadley closed out the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 73 to finish the 54-hole event with a 7-over par 221.
Sophomore Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) is third on the team with a 76.39 stroke average. Dixon shook off a tough first round score at the Bancorp South and posted scores of 76 and 73 in the final two rounds. Sophomore Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and freshman Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) rounds out the Spartans in the five-member lineup at the Gary Koch Invitational.
