Grayson Murray Qualifies For The 2013 U.S. Open
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's golf newcomer Grayson Murray (Raleigh, N.C./East Carolina) earned one of 57 qualifying spots spread across 11 sectional sites into the 2013 U.S. Open held this year at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., June 10-16. Murray was one of just three golfers from the Hawks Ridge Golf Club site to qualify into the United State Open Championship as he competed against professional and amateur golfers alike.
"It was incredible watching Grayson play at his U.S. Open qualifier," head coach Terrance Stewart said. "Assistant coach Dr. Bob Christina and I were both thrilled watching his wonderful performance and he will have a great week at the U.S. Open. As I have said many times before, Grayson is a world-class player and he will represent UNCG very well during his career."
Murray, who will sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules, fired a 9-under par 135 in the 36-hole event held Monday in Ball Ground, Ga. He joined professional golfer Ryan Nelson and amateur Michael Kim in the top three spots to qualify. He edged out professional golfer T.J. Vogel for the final spot by one stroke as he birdied his final hole to finish one shot in front.
Murray opened his 36-hole day with a first round score of 3-under par 69 as he posted four birdies and one bogey. He made his U.S. Open qualifying push in round two as he posted the second-lowest score on the course with a 6-under par 66. He rallied from a double bogey on his fourth hole of the round, No. 13, and closed out the round with seven birdies in his final 13 holes and an eagle on the par-5 No. 7. He finished his final 13 holes playing 9-under par to secure his spot in the U.S. Open.
