Men's Golf Adds Top Transfer Grayson Murray 06-02-2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's golf head coach Terrance Stewart announced the addition of standout golfer Grayson Murray (Raleigh, N.C./East Carolina) to the program Monday afternoon. Murray will sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will begin play at UNCG in the 2014-15 season with three years of eligibility remaining.

"The entire team and I are thrilled to have Grayson join our program," Stewart said. "He is a world-class player who will help us win championships. His commitment to excellence is second to none and having his presence at UNCG will make everyone better."

Murray, the No. 80 ranked collegiate golfer by Golfweek in April, played the fall season at Wake Forest and played in three events for the Demon Deacons, including an eighth place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegaite. He posted a 3-under par 213 in the 54-hole event, with scores of 70-72-71.

Murray transferred to East Carolina for the spring semester and played in four events for the Pirates, placing in the top 20 in all of his spring outings. His best finish of the spring came at the SeaBest Invitational in Florida where he finished sixth overall with a 22. He followed that up with an 18th place finish at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship, a 14th place finish at the Tiger Invitational and a 10th place showing at the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Prior to college, Murray was the No. 2 ranked junior player in the country in 2012. He won the 2010 and 2012 REX Hospital Open Junior Invitational, earning him a spot on the Nationwide Tour's REX Hospital Open. In 2010, he shot a second round score of 66 to become the second-youngest competitor to make the cut in a Nationwide Tour Event.

Murray qualified for the match play portion of the U.S. Junior in 2009, 2010 and 2011. He qualified for the 2009 U.S. Amateur as a 15-year old and was the youngest player in the U.S. to make it to the sectional qualifier for the 2009 U.S. Open. He won the Callaway Junior World Championships three straight years from 2006-2008, becoming one of four boys that have won the event three straight times, joining company with Tiger Woods.

Murray was a three-time All-Conference performer at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh. He took home first place in the 2011 North Carolina High School Invitational. He won the 4-A Individual State Championship as a sophomore and led Leesville Road to the team state title his junior year.

"Grayson adds to our nucleus of very good young players at UNCG," Stewart said. "The future of UNCG men's golf is very bright and will be a lot of fun for everyone involved."
