Coalson Vaults To Second Place Finish At SoCon Championships, Named Co-Freshman Of The Year 04-22-2013

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – UNCG freshman Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) posted the best score of the final round firing a 2-under par Tuesday to move up the leaderboard into a tie for second overall in the 2013 Southern Conference Championships held at the Ralston Creek Golf Course on Daniel Island. Coalson's play marks the seventh time in the last eight years that UNCG has placed an individual in the top five of the SoCon Championships.

Additionally, Coalson was named the Southern Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, sharing the honors with SoCon Championship winner Josh Lorenzetti of the College of Charleston. Coalson's honor marks the first time in UNCG men's golf history that a Spartan has earned Freshman of the Year accolades. He led all rookies in the SoCon this season with a 74.19 stroke average, over a stroke better than Lorenzetti (75.30), while posting four top 10 finishes on the year.

Classmate Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) joined Coalson on the SoCon All-Freshman Team as UNCG placed two of the five members on the team. This is the fifth straight season that UNCG has an All-Freshman honoree and marks the first time two Spartans were awarded the rookie accolades.

Coalson's second place showing is his highest finish of the season, surpassing his fourth place showing at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. Additionally, his 54-hole score of 217 is his third lowest of the season trailing his 211 at the Bancorp South Intercollegiate and his 216 at the Auto Trader Collegiate. He was in the top four of the standings from start to finish as he hit 11 birdies in the three-day event.

Coalson opened the tournament with an even-par 72, before following it up with a 3-over par 75 in round two Monday. He saved his best round for last as he finished with a 2-under par 70 Tuesday when he rebounded from a 2-over par start through the first four holes to hit four birdies in his final 10 holes of the championship. His second place finish marked the top showing for a Spartan since Ryan Heisey also placed second in the 2010 tournament as a senior.

Lorenzetti won the event with a 1-under par 215 (76-69-70) as he rallied to pull out the victory with a birdie on No. 17.  He was able to beat out Todd Eckstein of Davidson and Steven Fox of Chattanooga in the final pairing for the title as those two both bogeyed the final hole giving him a two-shot victory.

Coalson's play helped the Spartans to a fifth place finish in the team standings with a 909 (315-298-296). The Spartans rebounded from a tough first round 315 score to post back-to-back scores sub-300 with a 298 Monday and a 296 Tuesday to finish tied with Georgia Southern. Nationally ranked Chattanooga won the event with an 884 (298-290-296), finishing two strokes in front of Davidson at 886 (297-294-295).

Haithcock posted his second-lowest score of the season and his top round since the second tournament of the season (VCU Shootout, 71) when he fired an even-par 72 Tuesday. Haithcock turned in 14 pars, two bogeys and two birdies for the nearly clean sheet as he moved up 13 places to finish tied for 32nd overall with a 233 (81-80-72).

Senior Robert Hoadley (Union Pines, N.C./Southern Pines) also finished in 32nd place with a 233. Hoadley began his tournament with a 10-over par 82 before rebounding with a 3-over par 75 and a four-over par 76. Sophomore Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) finished the tournament with a 235 (82-70-83) to finish in 40th place while classmate Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) posted a 236 (80-78-78) to place 43rd overall.
