Liberty, SMU's Schovee lead NCAA regional after first round
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Liberty shot a 5-under 283 at the NCAA Greensboro Golf Regional on Thursday to hold the team lead after the first round of play, while SMU's Matt Schovee fired a first-round 67 to hold the individual lead. The tournament is being hosted by UNCG and the Greensboro Sports Commission on the Grandover Resort's East Course.
Liberty was the only team to post a sub-par score Thursday, putting three players in the top 10. Robert Karlsson and Chase Marinell are tied for fourth at 2-under 70, while Mathieu Fenasse is tied for ninth at 1-under 71. Niklas Lindstrom rounded out the Flames' scoring with an even-par 72, good for a tie for 13th.
SMU is second in team scoring behind Liberty with an even-par 288. Schovee leads a 1-2 punch for the Mustangs, as teammate Harry Higgs is tied for second with a 3-under 69. Schovee posted a bogey on his first hole of the day but was flawless after that, turning in a round-best six birdies.
Round two of the three-day tournament begins Friday at 8 a.m. The low five teams and the top individual not on one of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., from May 29-June 3.
