Menís Golf Places Three In Top 25 At N.C. Amateur Championship
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team kept the momentum from its record-setting collegiate season and took it into the summer amateur season as three Spartans finished in the top 25 of the 2014 North Carolina Amateur Championships this past weekend at the Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte. The four-round event was played on the 6,964-yard course at a par-71.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) led the way as the reigning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year finished tied for third. Jenkins posted a 10-under par 274 in the 72-hole event to finish four shots behind champion Josh Martin of Pinehurst (14-under, 270). He opened the week with a 1-under par 70 in round one before putting himself into contention with a 6-under par 65 in round two. He closed out the week with a 2-under per 69 and a 1-under par 70 as all four rounds were under par.
Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) was the Spartans’ second finisher in a tie for 14th place. McGlone was consistent all week long, posting a 5-under par 279 with scores of 70-70-69-70, carding four rounds under par as well.
Incoming freshman for the 2014-15 season Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) rounded out the Spartans in the top 25 as he was tied for 24th overall. Stockwell recorded a 1-under par 283 on the weekend, shaking off an first round score of 3-over par 74 to post three rounds at par or under at 69-71-69.
