LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Three members of the UNCG softball team were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Mideast Region teams, announced Thursday by NFCA. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) made first team as a first baseman, sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) made second team as a catcher and classmate Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) was third team utility/pitcher.

Bedwell picks up another honor after already earning SoCon Player of the Year and made first team All-SoCon. The Surrey, British Columbia native broke the single-season school record for RBI with 66, which is the third-most total in SoCon history. Bedwell also tied UNCG’s home run record with 17 tied with teammate Lindsay Thomas who set the mark last season. Her .401 batting average marks the first UNCG hitter to bat over .400 along with a school-record .786 slugging percentage.

Bedwell, a two-time NFCA All-Region selection, becomes just the third Spartan all-time and first to be named first team All-Region twice joining Penny Thompson (2002) and Alex Emeterio (2010).

"What Katelyn Bedwell accomplished this year at the plate was remarkable," said head coach Janelle Breneman. "From the first week of the season through our conference tournament, she was the heart of our offense. She thrived on being at the plate in an RBI situation. We knew she was a great talent for us last year and to see her take her performance to the next level was special. I am proud to see her many hours of hard work payoff and for her to receive this special recognition."

Lindsay Thomas earns her first All-Region selection making second team as a catcher. Thomas finished with a .388 average on 71 hits, 57 runs scored, SoCon leading 17 doubles, 13 home runs and 49 RBI. The Irvine, Calif. native won back-to-back Player of the Week awards and was a force all season during conference games. She led the team with a .469 average against league foes with seven doubles, six home runs and 24 RBI. She is a two-time All-Conference member as a catcher. She broke the SoCon Tournament record for most home runs with five, which included two multi-home run games.

"Lindsay Thomas had another outstanding season as a Spartan," said Breneman. "It can be very difficult to repeat a freshman performance like the one she had. She is another hard worker who puts in the extra time necessary to hone the skill of hitting. It was exciting to see her grow in new ways as a hitter and we are excited to see her continue to grow and produce for our program."

Nicole Thomas picked up her first All-Region accolade making third team as an utility/pitcher. Thomas was a first team All-Conference at utility and finished third in the SoCon with a .352 average on 50 hits, 33 runs scored, seven doubles, 13 home runs and 53 RBI. Her 53 runs batted in are second in the league behind teammate Bedwell and she tied a school record with three home runs in one game against Gardner-Webb. Thomas also holds the record for most RBI in a game with eight against Gardner-Webb. Thomas finished the conference season with seven home runs against league opponents and was a perfect 5-0 in the circle in 28 innings pitched. The Irvine, Calif. native finished second in wins with a 9-5 record as a pitcher in 91.1 innings.

"Nicole Thomas had a great break-out year," said Breneman. "The addition of her to our lineup made the top of our order so potent. Opposing pitchers had to "pick their poison" when it came to these three hitting back-to-back. She is another performer who is clutch in an RBI situation. For Nicole to hit with both power and for average is a special combination. She also juggles many roles for us on defense. We are excited about her future and what she means to our program."

The Blue and Gold finished the season with a 31-26 record falling in the SoCon championship game, 4-3 against Chattanooga. The Spartans finished with 30-plus wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2003-04.
