GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior first baseman Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Month for April according to an announcement Tuesday by the league. The award is determined through a vote by conference office personnel.

Bedwell hit .458 and slugged 1.136 with four doubles and 12 home runs in April, turning in four multi-homer games and eight multi-hit contests total. The senior from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, scored 21 runs and drove in 32 in just 17 April games.

Bedwell went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two home runs in a doubleheader split at Liberty to open the month, drawing four walks, one of which was intentional, in the two games, with both homers coming in game one. She turned in her second multi-homer game against Furman on April 6, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored.

She hit three more round-trippers in a doubleheader sweep of UNCW three days later, driving in six runs on the day. She hit a home run in each game of a sweep of Charlotte on April 16, going a combined 6-for-6 with a seven RBIs on the day en route to earning SoCon player of the week honors on April 21.

Bedwell hit a solo homer against the 49ers in another doubleheader the following week before closing her month by hitting .538 in a three-game sweep at Appalachian State. Bedwell had three hits in each of the first two games against the Mountaineers, hitting a pair of two-run home runs and a two-run single for six RBIs in the second game of the series.


Others nominated: Taylor Rogers (Georgia Southern), Callie Brister (Samford), Nicole Osterman (Chattanooga) and Courtney Price (Western Carolina).

The Blue and Gold will open the 2014 SoCon tournament against No. 4 seed Samford Wednesday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
