Softball Hosts No. 4 seed Samford at 2014 SoCon Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team will begin the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament Wednesday, May 7 against fourth-seeded Samford at 5:30 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans finished the 2014 regular season with a 27-24 record winning 10 of their last 11 games, including seven-straight against conference foes. UNCG completed a three-game sweep against Elon to claim the No. 5 seed and hold a 10-11 SoCon record.

The Blue and Gold are hitting .316 as a team and broke the school record with 79 doubles as a team. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park), named SoCon Player of the Year, leads the SoCon with a .429 average on 69 hits, 41 runs scored, 16 doubles, 17 home runs and a new school record 64 RBI. Sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood), first team All-Conference, is second with a .380 mark on 62 hits, 51 runs scored, team-best 17 doubles, eight home runs and 40 RBI. Twin sister Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood), first team All-Conference, is third at .365 on 46 hits, 32 runs scored, six doubles, 13 home runs and 53 RBI. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) made second team All-Conference and is hitting .336 on 39 hits, 38 runs scored, eight doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI.

In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 13-15 with a 3.38 ERA and has a team-high 148 strikeouts, including 15 complete games in 172 innings. Nicole Thomas is 8-5 with one complete game throwing 82.1 innings in 29 appearances. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 6-4 and has thrown 73.2 innings in 22 appearances with 31 strikeouts.

Samford earned the No. 4 seed after an 11-9 record in the SoCon and was 36-16 overall. The Bulldogs are led by Megan Dowdy, who is hitting .343 on 61 hits, 33 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, one home run and 25 RBI. Abby Adams leads the team with 14 home runs and 37 RBI. In the circle, senior Mollie Hanson has returned from last season’s injury posting a league best 22-8 record with a 1.36 ERA. Hanson has 18 complete games, four shutouts and 151 strikeouts in 175.1 innings. In the three-game series in Birmingham back in March the Spartans dropped two of three to Samford.

Tickets will be available for purchase on site.  All-session adult passes will be available for $30 while all-session youth passes will cost $15.  Single session passes will also be available for purchase and will cost $5 for adults and $3 for youths. Students at Southern Conference institutions get in free with a valid I.D.

All of the action will be available LIVE through SoConTV. Fans that are unable to attend will have the opportunity to view all of the games by logging on to and subscribing to SoConTV. The championship game, which is slated for Saturday at 1:00 p.m., will be broadcast on ESPN3. From the first pitch to the final out, every moment of the softball action will be available, including exclusive coach and student-athlete interviews and the final awards presentation.
