Softball Welcomes Elon for Senior Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team will complete its regular season with a three-game series against Elon starting with a doubleheader Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The series concludes with Senior Day Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
Before the game on Sunday, the Spartans will honor their three seniors as the trio of Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison), Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) and Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) have amassed 137 total wins, including 38 last season making the Southern Conference championship game.
The Blue and Gold are hitting .310 as a team, which is 35th in the nation and sit 16th in doubles per game at 1.58. Bedwell leads the SoCon with a .429 average on 66 hits, 39 runs scored, 16 doubles, 15 home runs and a new school record 58 RBI. Sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood), the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, is second with a .370 on 57 hits, 46 runs scored, team-best 16 doubles, seven home runs and 34 RBI. Twin sister Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) is third at .368 on 43 hits, 29 runs scored, six doubles, 13 home runs and 51 RBI. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) is hitting .336 on 37 hits, 33 runs scored, eight doubles, two home runs and 15 RBI.
In the circle, Hanks is 12-15 with a 3.46 ERA and has a team-high 135 strikeouts, including 14 complete games in 164 innings. Nicole Thomas is 6-5 with one complete game throwing 74.2 innings in 27 appearances. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 6-4 and has thrown 72.1 innings in 21 appearances with 30 strikeouts.
Elon improved to 24-24-1 and 6-12 in the SoCon after taking two of three against Samford last weekend. The Phoenix are led by senior Carleigh Nester who has hit 14 home runs and drove in 41 RBI. Alaina Hall leads the team with a .345 average on 51 hits, 35 runs scored and seven doubles. In the circle, Caitlin O’Shea is 8-13 with a 2.82 ERA and has 35 strikeouts in 131.2 innings. UNCG and the Phoenix are tied in the all-time series at 30-30-1.
