Softball Heads to Appalachian State for Weekend Road Series
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team travels to Boone, N.C. for the final time as a member of the Southern Conference for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. at the Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. The series concludes with a single game Sunday, April 27 at 1 p.m.The Spartans are 21-24 with a 4-11 conference mark heading into the three-game series with the Mountaineers. UNCG split a mid-week doubleheader against Charlotte dropping the first game 6-1 before coming back with a 13-1 run-rule win in game two.
The Blue and Gold are hitting .304 as a team, which leads the SoCon and sit 12th in the nation in doubles per game at 1.63. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) leads the SoCon with a .418 average on 59 hits, 34 runs scored, 15 doubles, 13 home runs and 51 RBI. Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) sits second with a .340 average on 36 hits, six doubles, 24 runs scored, 10 home runs and 42 RBI. Classmate Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) is third at .338 on 48 hits, 37 runs scored, team-best 16 doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) is hitting .327 on 32 hits, 26 runs scored, six doubles and 13 RBI.
In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 10-15 with a 3.63 ERA and has a team-high 123 strikeouts, including 13 complete games in 150.1 innings. Nicole Thomas is 5-5 with one complete game throwing 70 innings in 25 appearances. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 6-4 and has thrown 69.2 innings in 20 appearances with 28 strikeouts.
Appalachian State is 17-26 with a 5-9 SoCon record heading into the weekend series. Sarah Warnock leads the team with a .350 average on 41 hits, 19 runs scored, eight doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI. Cara Parker has hit seven home runs to lead the team. In the circle, Shivaun Landeros is 9-12 with a 3.10 ERA in 135.2 innings and has a team-high 95 strikeouts. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series with a 21-18 record against the Spartans.
