Softball Ready for Pivotal SoCon series Against Chattanooga
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team is set for a key three-game series against visiting Chattanooga starting with a doubleheader Saturday, Mar. 29 at 1 p.m. The Spartans will conclude the series with a single game Sunday, Mar. 30 at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are 13-15 on the season and are 2-4 in the Southern Conference after defeating North Carolina A&T, 7-1, Thursday night. UNCG currently is sixth in the nation in doubles per game at 1.81 per contest.
Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) leads SoCon with a .429 average after going 3-for-3 against the Lady Aggies Thursday. Bedwell has 36 hits, 16 runs scored, 12 doubles, a home run and 21 RBI. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) is second with a .313 average on 15 hits, three doubles and eight runs scored.
Sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) is third with a .312 average on 24 hits, 11 runs scored, four doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI. Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) comes in fourth with a .309 average on 25 hits, 13 runs scored, two triples and 6-for-7 in stolen bases.
Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) continues to lead the team in numerous offensive categories including home runs (7), RBI (27) and slugging percentage (.661).
In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 6-8 with a 3.93 ERA, including seven complete games in 87.1 innings. Nicole Thomas is 4-5 with one complete game throwing 57 innings in 20 appearances. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 3-2 after earning the victory against North Carolina A&T and has thrown 34.1 innings in 12 appearances with 17 strikeouts.
Chattanooga enters the conference series with a 4-1 SoCon mark, which is second in the league just a game from the top seed Georgia Southern (5-1). The Mocs won all three games against Furman last weekend due to strong pitching from Taylor Deason who is coming off a SoCon Pitcher of the Week award. Deason is 8-6 with a 0.84 ERA that sits seventh in the nation. Sophomore Katie Henderson has posted an 8-5 record in the circle and maintains a 1.79 ERA. Sophomore Anyssa Robles leads the lineup with a .341 batting average and 30 hits. The catcher is also tied for a team-best 21 RBI with fellow sophomore Criket Blanco. Sophomore Alyssa Taylor is riding a nine-game hitting streak. Taylor has totaled eight hits in her last 19, batting .421 in her last five games.
