Softball Hosts ACC Foe North Carolina Thursday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team will face ACC foe North Carolina for a single game Thursday, Mar. 20 at 4 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are 11-12 overall on the season after going 1-2 against Georgia Southern last weekend to open up Southern Conference play. UNCG was originally scheduled to play the Tar Heels in a doubleheader Wednesday but weather forced the game to be pushed to Thursday.
Fans are encouraged to wear Gold to the game, as the matchup is a Gold out.
Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) was named SoCon softball Player of the Week after a record-breaking performance last week against Gardner-Webb. Thomas broke the school record for most RBI in a game with eight and tied the record for most home runs with three. Thomas leads the team with six home runs, 24 RBI and a .739 slugging percentage.
Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) leads SoCon with a .435 average on 30 hits, 14 runs scored, 10 doubles, a home run and 18 RBI. Freshman Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) is second on the team with a .354 average on 23 hits, seven doubles, a home run and 12 RBI. Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) comes in third at .343 on 23 hits, 12 runs scored, two triples and 6-for-7 in stolen bases. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and senior Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison) are tied for fourth with a .324 batting average. MacReynolds was the hero with a game winning three-run home run against Georgia Southern in the series finale.
In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 6-6 with a 3.65 ERA, including seven complete games in 76.2 innings. Hanks has started 14 of the 23 games and has struck out 74 batters. Nicole Thomas is 3-5 with one complete game throwing 44 innings in 15 appearances. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 2-1 throwing 25.1 innings in nine appearances with 10 strikeouts.
North Carolina enters the single game with a 13-11 overall record after taking two games against ACC foe Pittsburgh last Saturday. Aquilla Mateen leads the team with a .441 average with two triples, nine RBI and 7-for-10 in stolen bases. Kristen Brown and Amber Parrish each have hit seven home runs as the Tar Heels have hit 34 home runs as a team. In the circle, senior Lori Spingola is 8-6 with a 2.84 ERA in 17 appearances with eight complete games and three shutouts. Spingola has 88 strikeouts in 91.1 innings to lead the pitching staff. The Tar Heels lead the all-time series against the Spartans holding a 44-8 record, including a 7-3 victory last season in Chapel Hill.
