Nicole Thomas Named SoCon Player of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) picked up her first career weekly award in being named the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the SoCon office.
Thomas was selected as the Player of the Week after hitting .385 with four home runs and 11 RBI in six games last week. Thomas started the week helping the Spartans run-rule Gardner-Webb, 15-5, in game two hitting three home runs and eight RBI. Her eight RBI set a new school record and tied the record for most home runs with three. Former Spartan Kelly Councilman has seven RBI against St. Andrews back in 1988. Only two former players have hit three home runs in a game in Karyn Thompson in 1995 and Kelly Allen in 2005.
The Irvine, Calif. native also had a RBI against Eastern Kentucky and finished the week with a key two-run home run off reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Month Sarah Purvis to help the Spartans outlast Georgia Southern 11-10 in the series finale. Thomas also picked up two victories as a relief pitcher against Gardner-Webb and Georgia Southern.
Also receiving nominations for Player of the Week: Appalachian State’s Sarah Warnock, Elon’s Alaina Hall, Furman’s Sierra Bishop, Georgia Southern’s AJ Hamilton and Chattanooga’s Alyssa Taylor.
