Softball Faces Eastern Kentucky Thursday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team hosts Eastern Kentucky Thursday, Mar. 13 at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are 10-9 after splitting a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb Wednesday dropping the first game 3-2 in eight innings and taking a 15-5 run rule win in game two.
Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) shined in game two blasting home runs in three consecutive innings. Thomas broke the school record for most RBI with eight and tied the school record with three home runs. Thomas leads the team with five home runs and 21 RBI in 16 games.
Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) holds the top spot with a .456 average on 26 hits, nine doubles, 12 runs scored, a home run and 14 RBI. Freshman Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) is second with a .389 average on 21 hits, seven doubles, a home run and 11 RBI. Junior Tatiana Alcala is third with a .370 average on 20 hits and 10 runs scored. Alcala leads the team with two triples and is 6-for-7 in stolen bases. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) is fourth on the team with a .344 average on 21 hits and a team-best 15 runs scored at the leadoff spot.
In the circle, Nicole Thomas also earned her second win of the season in game two against Gardner-Webb improving to 2-4 on the year. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 6-4 with a team-best 3.42 ERA, including six complete games in 59.1 innings. Hanks has started 12 of the 19 games and has struck out 52 batters. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 2-1 with a 4.54 ERA in 24.2 innings with 10 strikeouts.
Eastern Kentucky is 9-10 after dropping a 8-0 run rule loss against South Carolina Tuesday night. The Colonels are led by Katie Tackett who is hitting .304 on 17 hits, two doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI to lead the team. In the circle, junior Leanna Pittsenbarger is 7-5 with a 1.62 ERA in 13 appearances, including eight complete games, four shutouts and 111 strikeouts in 73.1 innings. UNCG leads the all-time series with a perfect 6-0 record.
