Menís Golf Sits In Second After Day One At Pinehurst Intercollegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 50th-ranked UNCG men’s golf team sits in second place, three shots out of the lead after round one of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon.

Round one was played on Pinehurst No. 8 while round two of the 54-hole event will be played on the famed Pinehurst No. 2, host of major championships. The Spartans will have tee times Monday between 1:04-1:40 p.m. for round two. The famed Pinehurst No. 2 course has hosted major championships and will be the home of the 2014 U.S. Open Championship and the 2014 Women’s U.S. Open Championship.

The Spartans carded a team score of 18-over par 302 during tough conditions Sunday on the par-71 course. UNCG sits just three strokes behind round-one leader Belmont at 15-over 299 while the Spartans lead Loyola (Md.) by one stroke at 303 and Eastern Kentucky by two strokes at 304.

Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) highlighted the Spartans Sunday as he holds sole possession of third place overall with a 1-over par 72. Coalson fired three birdies and four bogeys in round one to sit just three shots off the lead. Richmond’s Danny Pizetoski leads the Pinehurst Intercollegiate with a 2-under 69 while Belmont’s Ben Simpson is second with an even-par 71.

Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) continues his strong play of late as he is in a tie for ninth place overall. Dixon carded a 4-over par 75 in round one as he opened his day with nine straight pars to start before posting four bogeys on the back nine.

Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) rounds out the top three scorers in the Spartans’ lineup Sunday. McGlone sits in a tie for 12th place overall with a 5-over par 76 as he posted two birdies in round one.

Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) is also tied for 12th overall with a 5-over par 76 playing as an individual. Redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) is also playing as an individual and sits in a tie for 18th place after recording a 6-over par 77.
