Softball Travels to Cross-Town North Carolina A&T Wednesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team heads down the road to face North Carolina A&T Wednesday, Mar. 5 at 3 p.m. at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

The Spartans are 8-8 on the season after winning the 2014 UNCW Beach Bash with a 4-1 record last weekend. UNCG came away with victories against Brown, Bucknell (twice) and host UNCW.

Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) continues to lead the Spartans with a .426 average on 20 hits, seven doubles, eight runs scored, a home run and 11 RBI. Junior Tatiana Alcala, coming off a weekend where she went 8-for-14 with five RBI, is second with a .386 average. Alcala leads the team with two triples and is 5-for-6 in stolen bases. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) is third on the team with a .360 average on 18 hits and a team-best 13 runs scored at the leadoff spot. Freshman Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) had a break out weekend with eight hits, three doubles and four RBI, improving her overall average to .349 on the year.

Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) leads the team with two home runs and 13 runs batted in.

In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 6-3 with a team-best 3.89 ERA, including five complete games in 50.1 innings. Hanks has started 11 of the 16 games and has struck out 50 batters. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 1-1 with a 4.444 ERA in six appearances. Nicole Thomas picked up her first win over the weekend and is second on the team with 32.1 innings in 11 appearances.

North Carolina A&T enters the game with a 3-6 record with wins against Maryland Eastern-Shore, Gardner-Webb and Alabama State. The Lady Aggies are led by Dasia Moore who has a .360 average on nine hits, six runs scored, five doubles and six RBI. Senior Sabrina Edmonds leads the team with two home runs. In the circle, freshman Maiven McKnight is 1-2 with a 3.89 ERA with two complete games in 27 innings.

UNCG holds a 37-2 all-time record against North Carolina A&T. Last season, the Spartans won both games in a doubleheader, 11-8 and 10-1 in five innings.
