STATESBORO, Ga. – The UNCG women’s soccer team fell to Georgia Southern, 1-0, Sunday afternoon on the road at Eagle Field.

UNCG falls to 8-6-2, 3-2-2 in Southern Conference play and Georgia Southern improves to 5-8-2, 3-3-1 in the SoCon. The Spartans ended their 25-game road unbeaten streak in SoCon games. It was the first loss on the road in SoCon action since 1999.

The Eagles scored their late goal in the 79th minute off a corner kick from Nora El-Shami that went straight into the right corner of the net. It was El-Shami’s fourth goal of the season and marks the second time she has scored the game-winning goal against the Spartans.

Georgia Southern finished with six corner kicks compared to just one for UNCG. The Blue and Gold finished with just two shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) made six saves in the defeat. Simmons went over 200 minutes since giving up her last goal after back-to-back shutouts against Wofford and Davidson.

UNCG had an incredible opportunity for the equalizer with less than two minutes left in the contest. A ball was played into the box when Georgia Southern keeper Molly Williams misjudged the ball in the air leaving an open goal but the Spartans couldn’t get a shot off as Williams was able to cover it up.

Senior Lauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) opened the second half with a run and took a shot on goal but Willams made the save.

The Spartans controlled most of the possession in the second half but just couldn’t manufacture enough shot attempts on goal. Freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda’s Collegiate) had a shot in the 57th minute go just wide.

Ten minutes later, Brown worked her way through the defense but her shot attempt went wide again.

In the first half, the Spartans and Eagles didn’t get much going offensively finishing the half with a combined seven shots. UNCG had four with two coming from junior Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope).

In the 35th minute, freshman Mackenzie Noel (Braddock Heights, Md./St. Johns College) found some space and fired a shot that went just high over the net.

The Spartans return home to celebrate homecoming against Samford Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG is celebrating its 25th year anniversary and will be honoring the first team ever from 1989 at halftime.
