Women’s Soccer earns 0-0 Draw against Wofford 10-13-2013

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After 110 minutes of action, the UNCG women’s soccer team tied Wofford, 0-0, Sunday afternoon on the road at Snyder Field.

UNCG with the draw sits 7-5-2, 2-1-2 in Southern Conference play and Wofford is 6-3-3, 2-1-2 in the SoCon. The Blue and Gold extend their 24-game road unbeaten streak in SoCon games.  

The frantic pace continued throughout the game as the Spartans had a couple of dangerous chances in the overtime sessions.

Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) had a shot on goal in the 101st minute but the Terrier’ defense blocked it away.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) picked up her sixth shutout of the season after making seven saves. Simmons turned away two chances in the 108th minute to keep the game tied in the final minutes.

The Spartans best chance came in the first overtime after a corner kick led to a shot from Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School) that went wide.

In the second half, the Blue and Gold continued putting pressure on Wofford as White launched a shot heading to goal when Kimberly Cohn made a diving save to keep the game even in the 71st minute. Four minutes later, sophomore Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tennessee/Father Ryan) took a shot on goal but Cohn made another save.

Just before overtime, UNCG had one last chance on a corner kick when senior Lauren Lover’s (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) shot was blocked by the Wofford defense. UNCG finished with 21 shots and White led the team with five attempts.
In the first half, UNCG controlled most of the possession leading to five shots, including two on frame. In the 15th minute, senior Katie Durst (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) put a header shot on goal but Kimberly Cohn made the save.

The Spartans had another opportunity in the 34th minute when freshman Alexis Thomas (Bishop, Ga./Oconee County) fired a shot on goal but Cohn made the save.

UNCG finished the half with five shots, while Wofford took five shots as well.

The Blue and Gold travel to face Davidson Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and finish the road trip against Georgia Southern Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga.
