Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener to Georgia, 1-0
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team dropped its home opener to SEC foe Georgia, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
UNCG falls to 4-2 on the season while Georgia wins its fifth-straight game improving to 5-1 on the year.
The Bulldogs found the game-winning goal in the 58th minute when Madeline Barker collected a ball inside the box and buried a shot to the lower left corner just beating the keeper. It was Barker's third goal in six games for Georgia.
The Spartans had a couple of chances for the equalizer but couldn't quite find the back of the net. Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) finished with a game high three shots, while freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate) had a shot attempt on goal but Georgia's keeper Caitlin Woody made the stop.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) finished with eight saves, allowing just one goal in 90 minutes of play. Simmons has 35 saves in six games this season.
In the first half, the Spartans stood toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs ending the period tied at 0-0. White had a couple of opportunities in the half finishing with two shots and one that was on goal but Georgia goalkeeper Caitlin Woody made the save.
Simmons made a couple of big saves including a sprawling save in the 27th minute denying Laura Eddy's chance of scoring. Also Georgia's Summer Burnett almost scored but seniorLauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) was able to knock it away for the team save.
UNCG remains home when they host Big South member Liberty Thursday, Sept. 12 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
