Women’s Soccer Shuts out UNCW, 2-0 09-02-2013

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Junior Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) scored twice for the first time in her career to lift UNCG women's soccer to a 2-0 victory over in-state foe UNCW Monday afternoon at the ECU Soccer Stadium.

With the victory and a Western Carolina loss, UNCG claimed the East Carolina Tournament Championship.

"A very unique situation after being down 2-0 to a good UNCW team yesterday," said head coach Steve Nugent. "I give my team a lot of credit because they came out today and accepted a challenge. We weren't where we wanted to be yesterday but today was very different as we made some adjustments to our lineup."

UNCG improves to 3-1 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 0-4 on the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) finished with three saves earning her third shutout of the season. Simmons has 21 saves allowing just one goal in 390:50 played this season.

In the 50th minute, senior Lauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) crossed a ball into the box where Stokes just missed a hat trick after UNCW keeper Liisa Rahkola made a great kick save.

In the first half, UNCG took an early lead after Stokes found the right corner of the net in the sixth minute. Stokes corralled the ball inside the box and put home her first goal of the season.

"Having to play UNCW twice within two days we knew we had to score early and luckily that is what I did," said Stokes.

In the 28th minute, freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegaite) found space and broke away from the defense before setting up Stokes for her second goal of the game. Brown picks up her second assist of the season.

Sophomore Ashley Eddleman (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) earned her first collegiate start on defense playing a full 90 minutes.

UNCG next heads down the road to face High Point on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at Vert Stadium.
