Softball Adds Junior College Transfer Lacey Leary
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball head coach Janelle Breneman has added pitching signee Lacey Leary who transferred from Spartanburg Methodist for the 2013-14 season.
"We would like to welcome Lacey and her parents into the Spartan Softball Family," said Breneman. "Lacey is an established, talented pitcher coming off a very successful year at Spartanburg Methodist. Lacey is determined in the circle and will also help our team offensively. I am glad she chose UNCG and I feel she will help us reach our team goals."
Leary had a successful freshman season at Spartanburg Methodist helping her team to a 2013 Region X conference championship. She was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South region second team after finishing the year with a 15-2 record in 95 innings with 86 strikeouts. Leary had 26 appearances with a 2.27 ERA and one save in the circle. As a hitter, she hit .320 with six home runs, six doubles and 23 RBI.
In high school at South Stanley in Norwood, N.C., Leary hit .364 during her senior season with two home runs, 36 hits, two doubles and 31 RBI. She also went 8-2 with four shutouts and 61 strikeouts helping her team finish with a 27-7 record. Her team won the state championship in Raleigh in 2012 and was named District 6 Pitcher of the Year.
The Spartans will welcome six newcomers, including Leary, to last year's squad that finished 38-19 with a 12-11 record in the Southern Conference. UNCG returns 11 players, includingLindsay Thomas who became the first Spartan to win SoCon Freshman of the Year after blasting a UNCG record 17 home runs.
