Hanks’ Strong Pitching Leads UNCG Past Appalachian State in SoCon Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) pitched her second-straight complete game shutout to help UNCG softball take down top-seed Appalachian State, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans improve to 37-18 on the season advancing to the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament. Appalachian State falls to 31-21. UNCG will play the winner of Samford and Western Carolina Friday, May 10 at 12:30 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
Hanks (19-8) tossed another stellar performance inside the circle, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts in seven shutout innings. Hanks is 2-0 with 17 strikeouts in two complete game efforts during tournament play. Alissa Schoelkopf (20-11) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings.
UNCG took an early 1-0 lead after pinch-hitter Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison) lined an RBI single into swallow right field in the bottom of the second. With one out, freshman Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage after a sacrifice fly to left field. Senior Heather Robb (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) started the inning with a walk. Sophomore Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) laid down a bunt single to put runners on first and second. MacReynolds picked up her 20th RBI of the season and Nicole Thomas earned her seventh RBI.
In the bottom of the third inning, freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) doubled to right field and Robb came through with a key two-out RBI single to right field to give UNCG a 3-0 lead after three innings.
In the seventh inning, Hanks worked around a two out walk and induced a groundout to shortstop to send the Spartans into the semifinals.
