GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team has been named this week's Blue Chip Performers sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. The Blue Chip Performer is chosen weekly from all sports in season and runs throughout the 2012-13 UNCG Athletics season.

The Spartans finished the 2013 Southern Conference Championship with a 3-1 record falling in the title game to Georgia Southern, 1-0, in 11 innings after a walk-off home run ended UNCG's fantastic season.

UNCG played 57 games in the 2013 campaign earning a 38-19 record, which is the most victories since the 2003 season. Under first-year head coach Janelle Breneman, the Spartans entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed and picked up wins against Furman (W 1-0), Appalachian State (W 3-0) and Samford (W 12-2) en route to the title game.

Hosting the SoCon Tournament for the first time since 2007, the Blue and Gold received great pitching all tournament and it continued in the title game after 10 scoreless innings from redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior). Hanks was named SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player after 24.2 innings pitched, allowing one earned run, two shutouts with 20 strikeouts. Hanks went 24 straight innings without giving up an earned run until the 11th inning in the championship game.

SoCon Freshman of the Year Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) added to her record-setting home run total, blasting two home runs in the semifinal against Samford. Thomas finished her freshman campaign with 17 home runs and a team-leading .377 average landing on the SoCon All-Tournament team.
