Hanks’ Gem Leads Softball Past Furman in SoCon Tournament, 1-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team took down fifth-seeded Furman, 1-0, to advance onto the winners bracket in the SoCon Tournament late Wednesday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans improve to 36-18 on the season, while Furman falls to 27-26. Fourth-seeded UNCG will play No. 1 seed Appalachian State Thursday, May 9 at 4:30 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
Redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) improved to 18-8 on the season after throwing a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits with 11 strikeouts. Lauren Collier took the loss falling to 13-12 after allowing one earned run on three hits.
In the bottom of the first inning, junior Aisha Figueroa (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) singled to left field to start the inning. Freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) worked a walk to setup runners at first and second. Junior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) lined an RBI double off the left field wall to give UNCG a 1-0 lead and eventual game-winning RBI.
Senior Heather Robb (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) finished 1-for-2 with a double in the contest.
In the seventh inning, Hanks picked up two more strikeouts and finished the game with a groundout to seal the victory.
